Personal Taste
My kids sing all dayespecially The Bug. Always singing. She'll be playing with her dolls and softly singing, "I want to rock and roll all night...." She's turned it into a ballad. Boyo chimes in with "No, I don't want to fall in lovewith you." Honestly, I live in a rock and roll palace.
The Bug prefers musicals. She lights up whenever show tune graces the airwaves. At any point in a day, she can be heard attempting "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" or "Do-Re-Mi" or "Supercallifragilisticexpialidocious" (sp? anyone?). I'm going to encourage these tastes. I like to rock out to a wide range of music and I'm glad to see that the kids are finding their niche.
I took the kids to buy some of their own CDs. We were listening to the radio and playing music videos on YouTube in order to discover new sounds; to find their preferred tunes. I have been dowsing them with my music which is varied and now it's time for them to get some of their own.
The results (for now): The Bug likes show tunes, jazz and Neil Young, and Boyoafter hearing "Wicked Game"wants a Chris Isaak record. Denguy Haus has plenty of Neil Young and a variety of jazz focussing on Ella Fitzgerald, so we're good there. New to our collection: The Sound of Music soundtrack and Hello Dolly. For Chris Isaak, I'm undecided between Heart Shaped World and Wicked Game. Both records contain the track "Wicked Game"the latter is a compilation. If I try to be true to my roots, I'm an album buyer and generally not one to purchase Best Of's.
This was a great experiment and I'm glad I finally went through with it. The kids are starting to change over to "grown-up" music. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but it's nice to get away from Rafi and The Wiggles. Crikey, the Wiggles. Honestly. Every single one of their songs sound EXACTLY the same. I'd take the Backyardigans over those no-talent Aussies any day. Fine, "no-talent" is a bit harsh, they must be doing something right, but for the love of Mike they're annoying.
A shout out to crazymumma's kids for making my kids a mixed CD to help start them on this road to musical immersion.

11 Folks say:
I loved the Backyardigans for the choreography, as well.
That's awesome. My daughter is riding the fence right now; sometimes she wants kid music like the Doodlebops, and others she asks for contemporary stuff we listen to (current faves include Rehab by Amy Winehouse, Flathead by The Fratellis, and Whole Wide World by Wreckless Eric).
hear, hear. hear, hear. Get it? Ya, I know.
Love kids loving diversity in music. My eight year old is currently getting into Matt Costa and my son continues on in his love of Bowie. Curious to see what time will bring. And good god, I was found dancing in our front yard to the neighbourhood kid's blasting hip hop last weekend. Alas, it goes both ways.
PS The Wiggles suck. Even my kids have maintained this over the years.
Did I tell you I got a ticket to the upcoming Neil Young concert?
The kids are honestly very happy for me, but they do not like Neil Young.
What they do like these days is old Madonna (Material Girl), The Mamma Mia Soundtrack (younger girl), Greenday (older girl), a bit of April Wine (?!), Cyndi Lauper, Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog figures bigtime around here as well.
They do not like the CLash and the Ramones. And look at me with pity in their eyes when I am driving and something by someone like lets say Led Zeppelin comes on and I tell them that This Is A Very Important Song.
Give them the soundtrack to Annie. Its awesome. Oh, and Oliver.
WE listen to a lot of moody acoustic guitar folk-rock stuff around the kids. And Raffi. The Girl has so far been removed from the tween music scene which is something I am deeply, deeply grateful for. JOnas Brothers = No.
My daughter just loves the Beatles.
During dinner we turn our satelite radio to the 70's channel, sometimes the 60's channel. No commercials and a HUGE selection.
I'll never forget the time I rocked my son to sleep during his first gew months. Led Zepplin's "Kashmir" was his favorite!
That's awesome!
Annie the soundtrack was my first record (or was it Baby Beluga? Whatever, the timing must have been close). I belted those songs out like no tomorrow.
My girls love a wide range of music too from Bare Naked Ladies to Bony M. It always startles me when I hear them singing along.
Good job on the music scene, your kids are going to have awesome taste.
very good idea, well done daddy ;)
I'm just so grateful that my teen is into musicals and not crap like Brittney Spears! I indulge this wildly by taking her to as many actual, live musicals as I can afford.
P.S. But Heart Shaped World - gerat album!
Backyardigan's rock!! The little one (3) is so into the East Coast fiddle thing but my almost-teenager is totally revisiting my 80's youth by insisting on Duran Duran, Pat Benatar and Blondie. SHe even wears leg warmers and feather earrings...freaky.
